The name of Ganghwa has undergone changes over times:
It was called firstly Gapbigocha during ancient time, secondly Hyeolgu-gun in Goguryeo's Great King Gwanggaeto period, thirdly Haegu-gun in the reign of King Gyeongdeok in Silla kingdom, fourthly Ganghwa hyeon in the King Taejo of Goryeo dynasty, and fifthly it was changed to Ganghwa-gun in the King Gojong's reign of Joseon dynasty, and in March 1, 1995, it was incorporated into Incheon Metropolitan City.
As a sacred ground of the foundation of the country, it is the home of ideology of "Hongik Ingan" (Devotion for public welfare) of Dangun, the founding father of the first Korean kingdom.
Ganghwa has preserved many cultural relics as scattered around the island and developed the island for the multipurpose of historical education and beautification of environmental surroundings for sight-seeing visitors.
