Origination and Characteristic of Festival
Being opened at a richly historical town filled with the abundance and affluence of Ganghwa-do, the Ganghwa Salted Shrimp Festival makes a significant contribution to the dynamic activation of the local economy as well as the enhancement of sightseeing images. This festival actively promotes the exceptional superiority of the fresh shrimps caught in the Ganghwa coastal area and delectable salted shrimp produced using the superb quality salt from Samsan Salt Farm.
Regional Characteristic
Shrimps are mainly caught near Buleum-do, Jumun-do, Seo-do, Seongmo-do at the coastal area of Ganghwa-do. After the salting process, the salted shrimps are stored in the underground warehouses in Oepo-ri, which was previously a distribution center of fishery products. Since the ancient times, lots of shrimps especially white shrimps were caught at the Jindu Sea in front of Oepo-ri. As of late, numerous shrimp boats fill the Seonsu dock at Nae-ri, Hwado-myeon, Eoryujeong Dock at Seongmo-do, and Changhu-ri Dock at Naega0myeon. Shrimps that are widely distributed around Ganghwa coastal area are usually caught until the month of December.
Salted Shrimp - Pride of Ganghwa
The salted shrimps, which are produced at the sea in front of Ganghwa-do where Imjin River, Yesung River and Han River join together, is characterized by its savory taste and high nutritional value as these salted shrimps are produced using abundant nutritious salts induced from inland. Being widely known for exceptionally superior quality even during the ancient days, the salted shrimps have been presented to the king as a tribute from the region through the Mapo wharf at Han River.
