Stone Standing Buddha in Jangjeong-ri, Ganghwa

This statue is carved on thick slate of stone board in Goryeo era. This shows generally in good proportion, but it's big face, narrow shoulders and big hands show rather unbalanced proportion. According to a legend, when a woman washing cloths near a pond, a colorful rainbow appeared in the sky and same time a jade box floated from the bottom of pond, and when the box was opened a baby was there wrapped in silk fabrics. The woman was surprised and took the baby to the king and the baby was raised in the royal palace. The king gave the baby a surname of 'Bong' and first name of 'Cheonwu'. When the baby grew up to 10 years of age, he passed national examination and proceeded to high official position in Goryeo dynasty. Afterwards, Bong-Cheonwu, the 5th descendent of the family became the minister of the Goryeo dynasty and built Bongeunsa temple, in commemoration of the woman's glorified deed, and also built a Five Story Stone Pagoda together with this standing statue, and paid appreciation to the ancestors and the woman in yearly religious service of sacrifice.
